UNIQUE CHALLENGES

Historic Toronto homes (pre-1920) with stone foundations require specialized drainage approaches:

MOISTURE MOVEMENT

Stone foundations are designed to "breathe" - they allow moisture vapor to pass through. Modern waterproofing can trap moisture and cause deterioration.

MORTAR DEGRADATION

Lime mortar (pre-1900) is softer and more permeable than modern Portland cement. Water infiltration can wash out original mortar.

FOUNDATION MOVEMENT

Stone foundations are flexible and settle over time. Rigid drainage systems may crack or separate.
